f Snail Trails... - Art Eye Candy

Snail Trails...

So, just latelyI've been busy following another of my continued goals, and that is to get my artwork onto products.  I'm already licensed for my artwork on greetings cards and that has been totally fantastic.  But I'd love to widen the scope for new possibilities.
Not so long ago, whilst sitting with my Dad in the hospice, I happened to come across a posting on FB for Lilla Rogers new online course 'Make Art That Sells'.  It was the perfect thing, and as you might be aware, Lilla is a very fabulous Art Agent.
(find out about Lilla and the course I'm taking HERE)

Anyway, after Dad passed away, I decided that maybe I should go for it, and that it would also fit in nicely alongside the Masters Degree in Children's Book Illustration that I'm due to start in September. So, I signed up.
I thought I'd share one of the projects that I've just been working on for this weeks assignment.  The brief was to illustrate a book cover or spread for the story 'The Snail and the Rose Tree' by Hans christian Andersen.
Here's what I did.

(planning the page in pencil)
I thought the snail should have a distinguished look!
Next, I started to add color with watercolor paint.

such a fun project!

I made the foreground darker and added a little space for my name credits.  I also added an outline to the snail with indian ink and a dip pen (the kind you use for calligraphy).

 notice the little umbrella!

 and the roses.
(all the fine detail is done with ink)

And finally,
here is the final finished cover.

I'm really pleased how the cover turned out, especially as this is the first book cover I have had the pleasure of illustrating.

So today,
I'm waiting to hear what this weeks assignment will be so I can try my hand at that,
it's fun to try new things!
