I have just realised that it's the 19th of December and I haven't posted anything remotely christmassy!  That's so unlike me...
I love Christmas and everything about it.
I guess that this year, my mind has just been taken over a little bit with the worry of my Dad being ill, and the fact that I'm now at home looking after him rather than being at work and getting involved in the children's parties and Christmas activities.
So I've decided to kick off being festive with a little giveaway, the first of three!
It's my way of saying Happy Christmas and sharing some art for free!
If you'd like to win yourself a spot in JOURNAL CANDY Mixed Media Workshop, then all you have to do is leave a little comment on this post and that's it.
The draw (with a random number generator) will happen on
Friday 21st December at 12 midnight GMT.
if you want to guarantee your place on this fantastic course,
Places for this are filling up fast, so don't miss out!
(I also have payment plans available too)

So perhaps I should show you some arty stuff...
These are from a piece I demonstrate as part of PORTRAIT CANDY workshop.

I went for a little 'Madame Butterfly' theme again.

love layering...

This is the completed piece... I just LOVE her.
I'm really happy to say she has now found a new home Down Under.

Don't forget to leave your comment,
and keep your eyes posted for the next GIVEAWAY
coming soon.

Look where our 'Noddy' elf turned up this morning,
hanging onto the lights!

Oh, I almost forgot...

I am blessed...

I know this to be true.

This last year, even through the hard times, I have have been given an amazing chance.  The chance to use my art to take me on a new journey in life.  I can hardly believe the dreams that I have already accomplished in just a short space of time.  Some of them have happened by chance, and to get some of them, I have had to persevere, stick with it and not give up believing it would happen for me.
I had to really, REALLY believe that all this goodness (in the arty sense) could really happen for me and not just the other women I like to read about and admire.
I know I'm not the only one who does this, maybe be you do too, but I often find myself reading through arty magazines and dreaming of having such a fantastic arty life and career as I see in those pages.  I constantly daydream what that life would be like for me, where in the world I  would like to teach, what I would call my first book, how my home studio would look... you get the idea.  And this last 18 months, ripples have started to happen, little ripples of possibility and I'm so excited to see where they take me.  After all, I'm just a regular girl (well, ok, a 41 year old girl) who dreams of big adventures and if they can come true for me then they can happen for you and who doesn't get excited about that?

p.s. and now I'm teaching workshops too...

Cloth, Paper, Scissors...

One of the things that I really wanted to achieve this year (when I made my intentions list last January), was to get some of my work published in a magazine.  It was one of those things that I've dreamed of for years as I browsed through editions of my favorite arty magazines that I'd purchase during vacations to the US.  I used to look at the amazing artwork on the pages and imagine that maybe one day, just maybe, I would see mine there too.
As you know, I recently received an email from the editor of Cloth, Paper, Scissors and now it looks like this wish is going to come true.
Over the past few days, I have been mega busy getting all the artwork ready, filming videos and typing a few articles, it's been very busy.  BUT today, they are all (10 pieces of art) getting packed up and posted off on their journey over the pond.
To say that I am excited, is a total understatement, but I really am!
Anyway, although I can't show you everything, here are a few more sneaky peeks into what I've been up to.
These pictures show them in progress, you'll have to wait for them to be published to see the finished pieces.

Woo Hooooo!

And now that it's all done and dusted,
perhaps I should start thinking about Christmas!

But just before I go, I had to show off these fabulous pieces of artwork from some of the students on my PORTRAIT CANDY Mixed Media Workshop, aren't they amazing!

Rachelle x

Exciting times...

Its always funny how things turn out really great, especially when you might not be feeling quite so optimistic, but that is just whats been happening to me recently.
As you might remember, in my last post I said about my Dad being ill and how that had kept me away from creating and blogging, well he still is ill, BUT now that we have our little routine sorted, i can now manage to find time for a little art.
Anyway, the other day, whilst probably feeling a little sorry for myself, and a little tired, I happened to check my email account.
You'll never guess, but I had the MOST exciting email from the Editor of Cloth Paper Scissors.
(if you don't know about this publication CLICK ME )
Back sometime in early summer, I sent off an email with some of my artwork and a little explanation about how I made it.  I crossed my fingers and hoped for the best.  Well, this email that was sitting in my inbox was even better news than I ever could have dreamed of.  I'm sworn to secrecy right now (says the Editor) but all I can say is that it's going to be an amazing opportunity, and as long as I manage to get in the Christmas post, I should meet the deadline.

I have even more exciting news...
I'm teaching in LIFE BOOK 2013, and such a fantastic line up of teachers too, I'm so excited for this.
CLICK ME to find out more.

(look, I'm one of the 22 'incredible' teachers!)

that's not all,
the last bit of news I have to share is that my new workshop is now OPEN.
PORTRAIT CANDY started on Saturday!

So excited I can't sit still.

Rachelle x

Into the light...

Ok, so you've probably noticed that I appear to have been 'in hiding', or at least not really around recently.
Well let me explain...
I went back to full time teaching after the summer holidays, and once again I found it really tricky to fit everything in.
(I'm sure you working Moms know what I mean).

But now, some of you who are my friends over on facebook or follow my instagram feed will know that just recently, I have got back to making art again.

It feels SO good to finally have the time to follow my dream and embrace creativity.

But how did I do it?

Well, I have taken a break from my teaching career for now, to pursue my art and other things close to my heart.

it was hearing about my father being taken ill that prompted it,
despite being through bad news, it has turned out to be the best thing.

I can now get up and see my Little Miss every morning before she goes to school (something I used to miss with early starts at work), and I can spend lots of time with Dad and the rest of the family.

 And now,
now that I am beginning to breathe again,
now I can make art too.

I've come back into the light.

always dream

It's been two weeks since my last blog post...
I've been swept away in the business of life, art, family and everything else and time has just flown by.  Can you believe it's already the end of September?!

I may have been busy, but i have still been making some art...
This piece that I worked on this week is for the Altered brush project hosted by Donna Downey.
(thank you Bernice for giving me the push to do it)
Here's the progress pics, and I'll post you the link at the end just incase you fancy having a go too.

So, basically the idea is this...
you send off for a paint brush and alter it, then send it back for display in Donna's studio.

Here's my little contribution.

I gessoed the brush all over to begin with (both sides and including the metal bit, which I didn't bother sanding, but it would have made things easier).  the gesso took a while to dry completely, especially on the bristles, but it did make them all hard for working on.

next, I drew my image in pencil, and basically acted as though the brush was just an ordinary work surface, and I went about creating the rest in my usual way. (even though a brush is a lot more fiddly than a regular piece of paper)

This is after I gave her a first wash of watercolor (it's still wet in the photo) and surprisingly it worked quite well and kept it's color on the bristles.  After it had dried, I then used my old faithful pencil crayons for more color, interest and a little fancy detail adding.

Here's how she turned out.

Oh, and I'm sharing a top tip...
I ran out of fixative spray (to keep the watercolor and pencil from running in the gloss coat) so I used some hairspray,  it worked a treat, and is SOOOO much cheaper than fixative spray.

I LOVE how she turned out and I'll be sorry to send her off (I'd quite like to keep her myself) but I've decided to make a few more (to keep and sell).

You may be wondering what else i've been up to,
well I have moved the Little Miss into her own 'big girls bedroom' and taken over her old room (once a bathroom in a former life) and made it into an art studio.
I have a STUDIO.
Oh how I love to say that.
Now I really do feel like a real artist with a studio and everything. Hee hee.

this is just one side... Look at the brush.
And yes, little Miss loves to create in there too.
Here she is, still in pyjamas, making paper chains on a Saturday morning.

Simple pleasures.

Snail Mail...

It's been a frustrating week...
not with work, or home life,
oh no.
It's been a frustrating week with the mail.
Snail Mail to be exact.

I love the opportunity that I have been given to share my art around the globe with some very lovely people, I am truly blessed (and very grateful).
But just recently, the postal system seems to be living up to it's name 'snail mail' and it is taking so very long to send items that usually only take a few days.
I'm not sure what is going on, perhaps it's a new bunch of snails doing the postal run, but whatever it is, it's frustrating.
So I'm waiting patiently (as are some of my very lovely customers) for the post to arrive.
I can only apologise on behalf of the international postal service,
and keep my fingers crossed that my little packages of Art Eye Candy all arrive safely at their destinations very SOON.

Talking of mail,
I designed some new stamps...

how cool are they?!
I'll be sending them out on Art Eye Candy packages very soon.

Some good news is that this week saw the final session of my first online class
Chick Candy Mixed Media Workshop.

It's been a great success, and the best news is that it is now available to take as a
'self paced' style class.
Here's the pitch...
its filled with video tutorials, 25 downloads that include two exclusive artwork prints just for students.
Sound good?
You can sign up anytime (click the link at the top menu tab)
And if youre feeling a little curious as to what you'll be learning,
these chicks (on today's post) were taught in the class.

hope to see you in class.

Checking in...

It's been days since my last posting...
so much has happened.

I met with the art licensing representative to show my first run of designs, I was SO nervous that I even had artist block for a while, not something that happens very often, but it did.
She took my selection of designs (some you can see in the sneaky peek above) so now I just wait to see how they are received.  I've already made a start on my next designs, which although I cannot show in their entirety, I will show a peek as soon as they are done.
I'm pleased how these turned out even though they do still need a little tweaking until they are perfect.  I'm loving the little owl so much.

In other news, I'm back at work from today, hence the reason for my absence recently.  I have been prepping my classes and classroom ready for the new children and it's been lots of fun looking for new accessories and thinking of new teaching ideas.

Speaking of classes, my online workshop is now coming up to it's fourth session and is going really great.  The students taking part are producing some really fabulous Chick Candy.
I'll be re-launching the registration in a couple of weeks, that's when the workshop becomes a 'learn at your own pace' style class. Oh, and I'll be releasing the next workshop, Journal Candy, in October.  So yes, it is back to the juggling again...
Little Miss had her first day at 'big school' today too.
Busy, busy.

So now I'm off to bed for an early night ready to start it all again tomorrow.
Life is never dull.

This week last year I was in Florida,
in fact this week most years I was in Florida.
Yes I'm a very lucky girl.
We always went on vacation to Florida (I love that place) but this year after the ups and downs of my illness and not really being able to plan ahead too much,
we decided to stay at home.
And no,
home is nothing like the sunny delights of Florida,
but it does have delights,
and in between the rain showers, it has been sunny too.

Being at home makes you realise two things,
1. how much you love and appreciate going on vacation

2. how much you love just spending time at home.

This 'staycation' has given me the opportunity to make art,
see family and enjoy days out.
The time for making art has been really great and came at just the right time, especially with my recent news of becoming a licensed artist.  This might sound strange to you but I really do feel like a 'real' artist now.  I know some of you might be reading this and thinking 'come on Rachelle, you already are an artist', but being signed up as an 'artist' just adds the icing on the cake.
Does that make sense?

this is something I have been working on, yes it's an owl.
This is just collage at the moment but I'll be working on him some more with paint and pencils and stuff like that.
I won't be able to show him off in his completed state though, but I can show you little sneaky peeks.

I picked up all the ceramics that I did last week.
Ooh I really LOVE making this stuff.
These are just a few of the pieces,
They're little 2.5" charms.
So cute.

The glaze and the firing just make the colors POP.
Here are the little sweet charms in a dish... yes a DISH... oooh now this is SO sweet.
It's probably a good thing that I want to keep everything that I make right?
I suppose at least whoever buys them knows that I LOVED making them.

And last before I go,
after all my excitement of launching my online workshop,
I'm really pleased to report that it's all started off really well and we have even had a few students sign up just after we started.
Can't wait for week two.

Rachelle x

Chick Candy...

So I'm soooooooo excited AND nervous.
Tomorrow is the start of my first ever online workshop, (one of five I have in the pipeline), and I can hardly believe it.
This time last year, this sort of thing was just a dream.
It was one of the things that I'd always wanted to do but didn't really think that I could, never mind have enough technical knowledge to get an online course together, but with a LOT of hard work, tired eyes and a broken iPhone, I've achieved it.
I'm very proud, and I really hope that everyone enjoys it as much as I hope they will.

So if you've been following the blog recently, you'll also know that I offered a free spot in the workshop.
Today, the good old random number picker selected comment number 28 which was
(send me your email)
and I'll see you in class.

For those of you who missed out, sign up will stay open for a few more hours tonight (till midnight GMT) then it will close until the course has finished in five weeks time. then I'll make it available again as a learn at your own pace type thingy).

I'd better get some classroom passwords sent out,
class starts tomorrow!
woo hooooooooo

Rachelle x

Jump for JOY...

This would be me right now, well it would if I had blonde curly hair.
I'm so excited about things that have been happening recently,
things are just going

I have finally started to watch the video's from Mindy's class that I joined way back in April.
Here are a few of my first doodle faces 'Mindy style'.
It was fun drawing this way, and for some reason the faces smiled, something which my usual chicks don't always do.  I like how they turned out, I'll be adding color to them sometime soon.

The smiley faces even crept into my doodles too...
perhaps it's my happy mood that's coming through my artwork.

It might have something to do with this...

we went to the circus.
It was Little Miss' first ever circus visit.
This was the ring before the start of the show.
The circus is at Blackpool Tower and is another of those places that I used to visit as a child, it's still as magical today.
And the decoration is just breathtaking.

she even got her face painted clown style.

the best
is that this week
is the week that my online class starts.

is the first in a series of workshops that I have made.
They have been tons of fun to do, taken hours and hours to upload (I had no idea they actually took that long) and I'm hoping they will be fun to take too.
If you'd like to sign up,
hop over to the workshop page and click the class option.

Right now,
the plan is to run the workshop as a five week class,
then when it has finished, it will remain available as a 'learn at your own pace' kind of class.
I've made lot's of new resources and art for the class and I really want to show you, but for now you'll have to wait for the class.
(such a tease)

(if I'm not still sat up downloading videos)
we are having a day at the Pleasure Beach to ride the rollercoasters
Wooo Hoooooooooo.
What a week.

Rachelle x

Oh and to share in my good mood, hop over to the WORKSHOP page and leave a comment for a chance to win a FREE spot in class.
